Twice each summer, on 2 July and 16 August, Siena's magnificent Piazza del Campo is transformed into a medieval arena for the Palio, a bareback horse race that has been run since the 13th century. Seventeen contrade (city districts) compete with fierce pride for a hand-painted silk banner, the Drappellone, in a spectacle of colour, pageantry, and passion that lasts barely 90 seconds yet resonates for a lifetime.
The race is preceded by a two-hour historical procession, the Corteo Storico, where over 600 costumed participants parade in Renaissance regalia representing each contrada. Drums thunder, flags fly, and the piazza crackles with centuries of rivalry before the horses even take their positions at the starting rope.
