The Last Supper of Leonardo da Vinci

Painted between 1495 and 1498 on the refectory wall of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper is one of the most studied, most reproduced, and most emotionally powerful works in the history of Western art. It is also one of the most fragile. Access is tightly controlled: only 25 visitors are admitted at a time, in windows of precisely fifteen minutes, through a series of climate-controlled antechambers designed to protect the tempera pigments from humidity and pollution.

The result of this conservation regime is that most visitors — even those who have waited months for a ticket — experience the work in a state of hurried anxiety, surrounded by strangers, with a guide speaking over the background noise.
