Built in the first century AD, the Arena di Verona is one of the world's best-preserved Roman amphitheatres and the setting for the most spectacular open-air opera season in existence. Each summer from June to September, the Arena stages grand opera productions with casts of hundreds, elaborate sets, and live animals — performances on a scale simply impossible to replicate indoors.
The season's programme typically features Aida, Nabucco, Tosca, Carmen, and La Traviata, each staged with the full drama that only the Arena's unique acoustics and ancient stone can provide. As darkness falls and 14,000 candlelit torches are lit by the audience — a tradition since 1913 — the effect is utterly unlike any other opera experience on earth.
